Hi Ellen: I met you (kinda sorta) in -- get ready for this
-- Rick Wilber's journalism class at USF, I believe, in '90 or '91.
Anyway, a famous Florida twister picked my cat and I up about two years
ago, and we landed in Stamford, CT. We were aiming for Manhattan, but
we missed the mark by a smidge. I saw your name a zillion times when I
gave HWA a whirl for about a year, and I've been trying to get to the
KGB for a reading (sans cat), and I might just come up to you one third
Wednesday and say hi. The password will be rickwilber. :-) Take
care.

Hi Michael,
Yes, and I'm really looking forward to the barbecue and the gambling. I
was there for the Nebulas last year and had a fine time but not enough
time. Maybe I can come out a day or so early to fit all I want in.
I'll also be at Torcon.
I'd suggest you try the horror markets for a voodoo doll story. Cemetery
Dance or Weird Tales in print, Horrorfind, Gothic.net (although they
aren't reading right now) for webzines. You should check out the various
horror marketing newsletters such as Jobs in Hell, Gila Queen's Guide to
Markets, and join HWA if you're writing horror as they've got regular
market reports.

Hooray!!! Will you also be at TorCon 3? Those are my two conventions for
this year. If I sell a book I may even be able to pay for them! I plan
to start saving to possibly go to Glasgow too. That's a maybe, for
now.
I also see that you have a VooDoo doll collection. I have a short story
that involves one of those. I'm trying to decide where to send it. Any
suggestions?

together an anthology of them who might consider submissions?

Have I ever told you how much I admire you for your openheartedness

Ed,
Well, the problem is that editors read many many mss and we want normal
12 pt typeface to save our eyes. If you want a story's type a certain
way, you can indicate that once the story is bought--if you set off the
passages in the mss and make it clear that they're news stories or
quotes that would be fine. Once the story is bought, the copy editor can
be told how the type should be marked (or coded, if it's for an online
site).
Hope this helps.

Hi Ellen,
I've been reading manuscript guidelines for various magazines, as well
as scifi.com, and have a question.
It seems that if a story that has anything other than plain text, with
perhaps a small amount of italics, it is automatically rejected.
I have a story that involves the use of documents with small print and a
few graphics that are integral to the story. It seems there is no way
for me to submit this double-spaced/12pt and have it make sense.
Aren't editors missing a lot of good stuff?
Yours in growing frustration,
Ed.

Hi Lisa, Thanks for the nice words.
Ok, I'm going to try to show you the difference between single spacing

This is single spacing. It means the lines between sentences.
Now I've double spaced (I hope). That means there are two lines between
the sentences.
OK. Now I'll see if it worked :-)

rejected by the best?! LOL
I do have a question and it may seem stupid, what exactly does an editor
mean by double-spaced. A lot of editors ask that a manuscript is double
spaced, and I dont want a brilliant story trashed for an error like
that. Thanks in advance for helping a Newbie.

Hello Ellen! You finally have a site other than the one on
Omni -- wonderful! I can't believe that the instant I move out of the
Bay Area, you are going to be there... *twice*! (For ConJose and for the
Borderlands signing.) DOH! Come down to LA some time! :-)
Is there a TOC available yet for the latest YEAR'S BEST F&H? Just
curious!
I also wanted to say that THE GREEN MAN is stunning. The artwork is
amazing -- altogether a classy package. Hopefully I'll get a chance to
read it this weekend.
Anyway, great work!
Best,

Dear Ellen:
Most impressive. Also, extraordinarily revealing psychologically but
only stuff I already knew. Now, the rest of the world can find out, one
person at a time.
I'll have to come back at some point to read the interviews which might
be even more revealing.
Love,

Have done, John. You should be getting the June mailing in
the next day or so...I've passed your email address to Terry B, who is
still keeper of the list.

Hi Anne and Keith,
Thanks. More to come, slowly but surely. Some new party photos should be

and more links and oh, probably more books for sale if I can figure out
what I've got in storage.
Robert, more photos of you.

Ellen: Hmm...must do something about those photos. I'm
awfully chubby in the one on the left - I'd appreciate your airbrushing
out at least some of my chins. Don't know what inspired that, uh,
unusual expression in the one on the right. Will try to provide you
with better pix soon. Love, Carrie P.S. The rest of the site is
great!

Hey Ellen. Richard just pointed me here. I really like it!
It's classy and elegant instead of what most people do with their sites
(loud and aggressive).

If they can't smell it they don't know it's there...I
remember when a bird somehow got into my apt and I couldn't get it
out--it kept flying from corner to corner near the ceiling ...the cats
didn't even notice it.

Hi Eileen,
Mostly just my own titles. I finally gave the giant plastic monitor
lizard away--it took up too much space. We'll see what other odds and
ends I come up with though :-)
