Ellen's Australian Adventure: Brisbane
January 2005

The day I flew to Brisbane from Auckland, Kate Eltham and Robert Hoge arranged for a visit to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary which bills itself as the first and largest such sanctuary in the world. There were other animals than koalas. In addition to paying to hold and be photographed with a koala (pay for one photo, take as many as you like afterwards) we fed kangaroos and wallabies.

Saturday night I was put up in the Rydges Hotel in the south bank area of Brisbane. Sunday, Ellen Klages ( right) came over to hang out before Robert Hoge took me shopping at the supermarket to prepare for my week in the dorms in the wilds of the campus of Griffith University (which was bush). The Aurealis Awards were held Saturday night January 22nd. I'd met some of the Australians attending ten years ago when I attended Swancon in Perth. There were others, too, with whom I've corresponded.
